Safe Housing

Safe housing is the foundation of all other interventions. Recrea’s “Transitional Neighborhood Model” empowers women living in camps to self-organize, govern, and positively impact their communities while waiting for their applications for permanent housing to be processed. To ensure a woman feels hope and sees the credible possibility for a better future, women assist women with their applications for permanent housing – clarifying and helping with the requirements for being granted residency in the country, which is the first requirement for the permanent housing program offered by the Chilean government. Because this process can take up to three years – and can be derailed by a multitude of variables – women use this uncertain time of waiting to help one another tend to the social and emotional needs of their children, earn and save money, and acquire skills they can use after they leave the camps.
